Athana

In a world not far into the future where pandemics of evolving viruses are a regular occurrence: The Athanasia Project is run by a company called LifeTech with funding from a group of corporate financiers and CEO’s in the late 2020’s. Drawing from cryogenic theory and practice a group of Consultants have developed a project dedicated to placing a group of subjects into a prolonged coma of ten years inside a purpose built facility called Athana. The subjects are volunteers including project sponsors with their families and employees of LifeTech.
The project is run by an obsessive Physicist, Rudi Vlahov and a spectrum disorder Botanist, Hans Valerian. The Board of Managers operate in anonymous secrecy, a faceless group of men determined to transcend the boundaries of ethical science with its legal and moral limitations in pursuit of a ground breaking scientific advancement.
Management of the project in its final months before the comatisation deadline is beset by the personal and emotional problems of the participants and their families as well as seemingly insurmountable technical problems. Staff and subject families undergo a series of crises as comatisation approaches.
The Methcliffes and Truscotts have to deal with an intense relationship between their children Jodie and Toby who want to leave the project. The Waldorf’s daughter Pixie suffers metal health issues over her rejection by Toby Truscott.
Employee subjects Jessica Watt and Joseph Warner begin a relationship. Their request to leave the programme is denied. Francine Wellard, a Consultant secretly helps them escape. Rudi Vlahov and Hans Valerian murder her. When the murder is investigated Rudi commits suicide. New staff are brought in but eventually the programme is aborted. A pandemic in the world outside delays the evacuation of staff and subjects.
